Omar Vélez Pagán faced a military tribunal for a pre-hearing at Fort Bragg, North Carolina on Monday, January,10.
Relatives of the dead college student traveled to the U.S. for the hearing. Rogelio Rodríguez, the victim’s father, said he was pleased with the decision, but said it was difficult to face his daughter’s alleged killer.
“I trust that justice will be served,” he said.
Rodriguez praised the work of prosecutors, who offered compelling evidence to contradict the defendant’s claim that the death was an accident.
“It has been very difficult for us, this has been an eight-month ordeal,” he said.
Rodríguez’s body was found on June 23, 2014, by a police officer on a farm near the Guarare River in Los Santos. Vélez Pagán had apparently been in a relationship with the student. The 36-year-old sergeant was in Panama on an assignment to train local police reports La Prensa
He faces charges of murder, assault, obstruction of justice and possession of steroids.
He faces life in prison and a dishonorable discharge if convicted. Though the crime happened in Panama, he is being tried in a U.S. military court.
